April - Bo Diddley Crystal Ballroom 1967 [ Back to Gallery ]

When I first arrived in San Francisco the summer of 1967, the first place I wanted to go to was the Fillmore Auditorium. Not knowing the streets of San Francisco, I wandered around that night until I finally found it, which was probably not the best idea since the Fillmore was in a very sketchy part of town. I remember it was a Sunday night and after paying my $2 admission, grabbing an apple I entered the main floor. There could not have been more than 20 people in attendance, the strobe light was going and Big Joe Williams was just finishing his set as he set in a rocking chair. The next act to come on was Bo Diddley and he immediately broke into Who do you love, later that night to be performed by Quicksilver Messenger Service.

Having never seen Bo before, I was totally blown away by how good he was and when he did Im a Man, whose only version of he song I had ever heard was the Yardbirds, I realized Bo was not only an outstanding performer, but the music was truly in his soul.

Very few posters exist with only Bo headlining and this is one of the all time great with his famous square guitar.
